New favourite scene in Elementary.

When they break into the mortuary in episode 21 to check out the pacemaker guy. Sherlock wants to give him an autopsy but Watson refuses to carry it out, so he attempts to, but he is so rubbish that she keeps shouting directions at him and then eventually takes over because he is that bad.

This is really awesome, and on point. Europe supported Zionism because even after being caught with their pants down re: mass genocide, they still wanted more than anything to get rid of all their Jews, and this was an easy way to do it! Europe did not and does not racialize even white-skinned Jews as “white.”

However, I do take issue with your statement “settler colonial genocide.”

Ethnic cleansing, yes. Genocide, no. This should be self evident, and I am basing this off what other Palestinians have told me, not just academic studies of genocide. I’m inclined to accept their view on the matter.

There is no doubt that Israel has acted in a colonialist-ish manner (how do I adjective), but Israel is still not comparable to white colonialism. Israel isn’t America or Australia. Jews as an ethnic group are indigenous to the Levant, have maintained presence, there and only left because they were forced out by conquering empires. And Jews have never relinquished their claim to their homeland as a people and a culture (quite the opposite!), and migration back was constant throughout the millenia, long before the advent of Zionism. (And indeed, whilst Zionism was more prevalent among European Jewry, this aspect was part of what allowed it to gain traction with Middle Eastern and North African Jewry, though not at the same rate.)

This is no to detract or minimize the horrible crimes that Israel has committed and continues to commit against the Palestinians. I mention this because it’s important to be aware of nuance and history. That the above is true does not take away or diminish crimes against the Palestinian people or their right to freedom and independence.

I tend to stay away from saying anything about Israel/Palestine for fear of putting my foot in my mouth, since I really know very little about anything to do with any of that, but this was a pretty interesting read and it seems like there are actually some thoughtful and nuanced ideas/opinions here.

Mother Wants Class Photo Retaken After Disabled Son Placed Far To Side Away From Classmates [TW: Ableism, Discrimination Against Disabled People]

A heartbreaking photo of a second grader with spinal muscular atrophy who was forced to “sit out” his class photo went viral over the weekend, sparking accusations of discrimination directed toward the school photography company Lifetouch Canada Inc.

“I couldn’t comprehend how the photographer could look through the lens and think that this was good composition,” Miles Ambridge’s mom Anne Belanger told the Toronto Star. “This just boggled the mind.”

The New Westminster, British Columbia, native said she refused to show her 7-year-old the photo — “Look at the angle that he was in. He wants to be part of the gang so much,” she told The Province — but did post it on Lifetouch’s Facebook page to bring the injustice to the company’s attention.

“This was not a malicious act,” Belanger acknowledged. “I don’t think it was done on purpose. I just don’t think there was any rational thinking behind it.”

“For some reason it makes me feel even worse that he’s so happy in the picture,” said Miles dad, Don Ambridge. “I think it’s because he’s still innocent…He’s still naive to how other people can treat him.”

Following significant “coaxing,” Lifetouch finally agreed that the photo was a “mistake,” and arranged to have the photo re-shot, this time with Miles sitting on a bench beside his classmates with a caregiver providing him with support off-camera.

Despite the rectification, Herbert Spencer Elementary School said it would no longer be employing the company’s services following a number of complaints concerning the photographers’ lack of concern.

“We had several comments from teachers who said they just didn’t feel that they had taken the time,” said school principal Tracy Fulton.

Lifetouch has yet to issue a public statement concerning the incident.

Is it just me or can people not see the ends of the benches there? They can’t place him in front of the students standing because his chair is tall. And I’m assuming he can’t be out of the chair safely. So it looks like he was actually placed next to the benches as best as they could. The teacher is so close because she can easily stand right there.

I’m just saying. I don’t believe this was discrimination. I fully believe that it wasn’t very easy to get him any closer without having him too far back so you couldn’t even see him or in the front and blocking other students..

i worked for lifetouch for over two years before i had my son, and i can honestly say that as a company we were not allowed to move a child from a wheelchair on to anything, the school had to have someone do it because of insurance reasons, if that child was hurt we would be sued not the school this photographer did what he/she was trained to do. the chair was placed in the best location it could be without blocking other children or making the photo look disproportionate. there was no discrimination and if anyone is to blame it is the parents/teacher/aide they should have moved that child on to the bleachers if it was possible for him to sit unassisted.

bullshit fucking commentary. you need to get your internalized ableism in check. and stop trying to hide behind fear of liability or some such bullshit. accomodations could’ve been made and the fact that they were for the second photo only proves the point that teachers, students and photographer saw nothing wrong with excluding the different kid.

Well yeah, they consulted with lawyers and found a way around the liability after the controversy broke out. Schools have a million rules regarding when it’s OK to lay a single hand on a kid, and people lose their jobs for breaking these rules all the time. They had a limited time to get this photo done because the day has to continue and the photographer had other schools to get to, so they put the kid next to the bench.

Honestly, when I saw the headline, I assumed the picture above was the retaken photo.

Wait, wait, wait, hold on: There was no need to take the kid out of his wheelchair. All you needed to do was spread the kids out better on the benches. That’s it. The problem is that all the kids are RIGHT next to each other, while Miles is really far away. If you just space the kids out so he is a far from the next person as all the other ones are, then the picture would be fine.
