I live in London, but my heart is in the Goon Docks. Please take the time to cruelly judge me from the following links:
amazon wishlist Capitalism!
lastfm Noises!
polyvore Superficiality!
listal Films and books!
I am also on twitter, but you'll have to ask VERY NICELY for the link.
Can you be anti-porn and pro-sex?
GRAGH. There was me thinking that this would be a genuinely more positive spin on this weird hyperbolic vendetta against porn, especially as I class myself as a pro-sex feminist. BUT NO. This calls for a slightly inarticulate rant.
IT IS SO PATRONISING. And guess what? It is no different from every single other damned anti-porn feminist article I’ve ever read. I hate the argument, “I’ve seen enough porn to know….” - really by that statement, you mean, “I’ve seen enough guy on girl misogynistic white people porn to know…”
I get that the effect it has on people is bad. And I do genuinely agree that when viewed by the wrong people, it can give a bit of a skewed perspective on sex that isn’t healthy whatsoever. And I am definitely not defending the sort of porn that degrades both men and women. What I’m saying is that it’s slightly dangerous to tar everything with the same brush.
There was a tone to this particular article that really felt a bit wrong. Patronising, as I’ve already said, but also totally dismissive. Thank goodness, someone commented on it (at time of writing), asking the writer to consider alternative porn which deliberately sets itself apart from the stereotypical stuff we think of when we think of pornography. The original writer hasn’t responded to this criticism yet, but I’ll be keeping an eye out.
I’m getting a bit sick of going to feminist events and having EVERYTHING blamed on porn (and don’t even get me started on OBJECT). If I want to go and watch porn, I will, dammit, and I won’t let anyone tell me that I’m a bad feminist for doing so. Back to my “porn dungeon” (genuine quote from the article) for me.
A woman after my own heart!
